The historic mansion and beautiful formal terraced gardens offer a perfect venue for your special day. Your bridal procession will walk through this picturesque setting as musicians play in a charming garden teahouse. After the exchange of vows, guests can enjoy cocktails in the garden or visit the mansion while wedding photographs are taken. Our gardens, grounds and historic buildings provide wonderful backdrops to capture the magic of this important occasion. Dinner and dancing take place under an elegant tent on the front lawn of the mansion. Other venues are also available.

The property is currently closed for visitation December 31- March 28. To view the property, please schedule an appointment with our special events team. Oatlands will resume regular business hours March 29.
You are welcome to visit the property any time during our normal hours: April through December, 10:00AM- 5:00PM, Monday through Saturday; and 1:00PM- 5:00PM on Sunday.
When the property is open April through December, please pick up a complimentary pass to the grounds at the Carriage House Gift Shop. [This pass does not include admittance to the mansion]

CARRIAGE HOUSE:
For more than 20 years, the Carriage House and Courtyard space at Decatur House has provided a beautiful backdrop to countless events, and continues to be recognized as a top-event venue in the DC area. This past November, we started a renovation project to further improve the event spaces at Decatur House.
The Carriage House renovations, completed April 30, 2012, maintained the space’s versatility and gracious feel by providing a small increase in capacity and updating the finishes, carpet, lighting and audiovisual systems. The addition of a covered portico has improved the transition between the Carriage House and Courtyard spaces.

With it's Copper bars, a fireplace lounge, and spacious covered patios our Tasting Roomcan accommodate up 200 seated guests. It is our most popular choice for wedding receptions, private events and parties.
Use the Main Lawn as an extension of your tasting Room rental . Guests can mingle under the stars on our lush lawn, enjoy the outdoor fire pits, picnic tables all of which are lighted by beautiful stirngs of white lighting.
If you prefer an outdoor venue, The Hillwood Ruins feature an expansive lawn and vineyard views. The Hillwood Ruin site can accomodate any party size and numerous tent options are available. This historic location is a favorite for weddings and private dinners.
The rustic space in the Barrel Room is perfect for full scale events including birthday parties,bachlorette parties, rehearsal dinners, anniversary parties, corporate retreats, sales trianing and client apprecition events. The room can accomodate up to 90 seated guests and 125 for a cocktial style reception.
This outdoor space is available for groups who do not need full service event planning but instead simply nedd a beautiful space for a wine tasting, birthday party, bachelorette party, rehearsal picnic, or anniversary party.
Our beautiful second level Club Members deck provides sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and can accommodate up to 50 people for cocktail parties, birthday parties or client appreciation events Monday through Thursday. For weekend wedding events it is often used as a cigar lounge and hideaway for the bride and groom.

Since opening in 2006, Long View Gallery has been operating in the Shaw Neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Our focus has been on promoting the Washington area's burgeoning art community by highlighting local and regional artists on its exhibit walls. Through our many special events, we have brought artists into the community and hope to continue that mission for years to come. Monthly exhibitions as well as a growing permanent collection showcase a diverse group of both established and emerging new artists. Long View Gallery presents Washington D.C.'s fresh talent. Our knowledgeable staff offers design consultations, delivery and access to in-house master framing.
Part gallery/part event space, Long View Gallery's new home boasts a bevy of desirable attributes. With 5,000 sq ft and 20 ft ceilings, the space can hold up to 400 guests for corporate events and private functions. Modern track lighting along with accommodations for caterers, DJs, and access to the historic Blagden Alley, make the Gallery a premiere spot for hosting and gathering. The venue's blank canvas appeal and flexibility to work all types of events and budgets makes the space highly desirable and completely unique in the metro area. Carine began her career in fashion over 10 years ago when she moved to New York City to join the design team at AEFFE (the parent company of Moschino, Jean Paul Gaultier and Alberta Ferretti). When family concerns brought her back to Washington DC, she began working with Vera Wang, and was eventually hired away to Priscilla of Boston. After local success and recognition, and as her reputation grew, she was courted to Saks Fifth Avenue in Tyson's Corner to head the bridal salon.
Why DC Needs One More Salon
Carine's position at DC salons afforded her the opportunity to interface with the design community in NYC. Twice yearly the industry gathers for bridal fashion week where there are fashion shows, runways, models and designer parties. Carine attended every one, where it was her job to hand-select wedding dresses off of the runway to carry in store. Over the years she developed close relationships with some of her favorite designers, and made many friends at salons in New York City and across the country. Carine noticed that there was a big difference between the typical bridal salon in New York and the typical bridal salon in DC. New York bridal salons tended to be more sophisticated, the staff more knowledgeable (often with a background in design), and the collection of dresses larger. Carine felt that with her experience, contacts, and vision, she could bring the look and feel of a New York City salon to the Mid-Atlantic.
The Store Philosophy
Carine's Bridal Atelier highlights the artistry of design in bridal fashion, and showcases the personality of individual designers as it comes out in their gowns. Carine's offers an unparalleled wedding gown expertise and tailors bridal fashion to a body type, personality and destination.
When Carine began sharing her idea to designers such as Angel Sanchez, Kenneth Pool, Mellissa Sweet and Reem Acra they encouraged her and pledged their support. Currently, over 100 of the best dresses from Carine's favorite designers are onsite at the Georgetown boutique.
The store is built to be an oasis, away from high speed life. Every bride entering will be afforded privacy by the spaciousness, a sense of calm, and personalized attention by fashion experts. The store is designed to offer a soothing experience that creates an enjoyable event to share with those most loved.
Carine's Bridal Atelier's mission is to provide brides with unparallel service and a customized experience. The product sold is not the gown, but the groom's smile when the bride first appears on the wedding day, the whir of camera flashes on the walk down the aisle and the "you never looked more beautiful" twenty years after upon looking down at a yellowed photograph.

Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah
"Bar Mitzvah" literally means "son of the commandment." "Bar" is "son" in Aramaic, which used to be the vernacular of the Jewish people. "Mitzvah" is "commandment" in both Hebrew and Aramaic. "Bat" is daughter in Hebrew and Aramaic. (The Ashkenazic pronunciation is "bas"). Technically, the term refers to the child who is coming of age, and it is strictly correct to refer to someone as "becoming a bar (or bat) mitzvah." However, the term is more commonly used to refer to the coming of age ceremony itself, and you are more likely to hear that someone is "having a bar mitzvah" or "invited to a bar mitzvah."
So what does it mean to become a bar mitzvah? Under Jewish Law, children are not obligated to observe the commandments, although they are encouraged to do so as much as possible to learn the obligations they will have as adults. At the age of 13 (12 for girls), children become obligated to observe the commandments. The bar mitzvah ceremony formally, publicly marks the assumption of that obligation, along with the corresponding right to take part in leading religious services, to count in a minyan (the minimum number of people needed to perform certain parts of religious services), to form binding contracts, to testify before religious courts and to marry.
A Jewish boy automatically becomes a bar mitzvah upon reaching the age of 13 years, and a girl upon reaching the age of 12 years. No ceremony is needed to confer these rights and obligations. The popular bar mitzvah ceremony is not required, and does not fulfill any commandment. It is certainly not, as one episode of the Simpsons would have you believe, necessary to have a bar mitzvah in order to be considered a Jew! The bar or bat mitzvah is a relatively modern innovation, not mentioned in the Talmud, and the elaborate ceremonies and receptions that are commonplace today were unheard of as recently as a century ago.
In its earliest and most basic form, a bar mitzvah is the celebrant's first aliyah. During Shabbat services on a Saturday shortly after the child's 13th birthday, or even the Monday or Thursday weekday services immediately after the child's 13th birthday, the celebrant is called up to the Torah to recite a blessing over the weekly reading.
Today, it is common practice for the bar mitzvah celebrant to do much more than just say the blessing. It is most common for the celebrant to learn the entire haftarah portion, including its traditional chant, and recite that. In some congregations, the celebrant reads the entire weekly torah portion, or leads part of the service, or leads the congregation in certain important prayers. The celebrant is also generally required to make a speech, which traditionally begins with the phrase "today I am a man." The father traditionally recites a blessing thanking G-d for removing the burden of being responsible for the son's sins (because now the child is old enough to be held responsible for his own actions).

Two Historic Houses for Your Next Event
The Meridian House entrance boasts a welcoming limestone façade and two large oak doors. Over the front doors, the Latin inscription, “Quo habitat felicitas nil entret mali,” provides an inspiring message: “Where happiness dwells, evil will not enter.”
Though nestled quite close to the heart of Washington, DC, Meridian House is a spectacular retreat, surrounded by stone walls which shelter a grove of linden trees and manicured gardens.

Cocktail Reception: 200 maximum
Seated, with Dancing: 190 maximum*
*The property is most flexible at 150 seated guests or less. From May through September, the maximum capacity is 150 guests, so that we can best regulate the interior temperatures of the house.
