All event rentals must include time for preparation, guest presence, and clean-up.
Additional Responsibilities of the Contracting Party Liquor License: Renter/Caterer must obtain a Washington, D.C. single event liquor license.
Event Insurance: The contracting party must arrange liability insurance for bodily injury and property damage with a combined single limit of no less than $1,000,000, adding The NSCDA and Dumbarton House as additional insured.
Security Deposit: A security deposit in the amount equal to one hour of rental time is due and payable at the signing of the contract agreement. Dumbarton House retains the right to use any or all of the security deposit toward any claim made for overtime, clean up, damages to or destruction of Dumbarton House or any property located in or on the premises belonging to Dumbarton House, as a result of the contracting party’s use of the premises on the event date. Note: Events that extend 16 minutes beyond the contracted time period are charged the amount equal to one hour of rental time (based upon the departure of the last vendor).
Rental Fee Deposit & Balance Due: One half of the contracted amount is due within two weeks of concluding the agreement. If no deposit is received the contract is no longer valid. The balance of the rental fee is then due 90 days (three months) prior to the event. Overtime is billed after the event is complete.
Dumbarton House offers a setting that is stately, charming, and elegant for private events ranging from corporate luncheons, meetings and conferences to wedding ceremonies and receptions, garden and tea parties. The museum ‘s first floor is normally open as guests arrive, giving them an opportunity to view the period rooms.
Rentals include use of the 40-by-26-foot Belle Vue Room ballroom/banquet space and grounds. The Belle Vue Room is elegant and modern, with blond wood floors, walls painted a neutral Federal period-style yellow with accent panels of gold fabric, and 13-foot white coffered ceilings. The ballroom opens onto a courtyard paved with slate, where a tent can be erected to accomodate additional guests.

While every effort will be made to ensure that private events hosted at Dumbarton House are enjoyable and memorable, the need to preserve its period rooms and safeguard its collections makes it necessary for Dumbarton House to impose certain conditions in connection with events hosted here . The museum serves as the entry for guests at events on the premises. No food or beverages are permitted in the museum, however. No beverages that are red in color, including red wine, tomato juice, and cranberry juice, may be served at an open bar. They may however be served at a seated dinner. Event insurance is required. Insurance is available from wedsafe.com or rvnuccio.com. Tenting on the courtyard adjacent to the Belle Vue Room is required for any event with more than 80 seated guests and more than 140 standing guests. All prospective event hosts are required to visit Dumbarton House before reserving event space. To schedule a weekday visit, send an e-mail to

During weekend museum hours, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, prospective hosts are welcome to visit.
