Created over 100 years ago by the merger of several prominent social clubs in Washington, DC, Woodmont Country Club continues to be the very essence of tradition, elegance, and exceptional service that truly makes our Members think of the Club as their “home away from home”.

Originally located on a bluff above Georgia Avenue and Decatur Streets, the Club moved in 1921 to Bethesda, at what is now the site of the National Institutes of Health, and then in 1950 to its present location in Rockville on 459 lush, beautiful acres

Woodmont has hosted United States Presidents and Vice Presidents as well as Heads of State from other countries. The Governors of Maryland, Mayors of the District of Columbia as well as many other dignitaries and celebrities have also visited our club.

Our championship North Course, the original 18 hole course in Rockville, was designed and constructed by Course Architect Alfred Tull with input and assistance from Woodmont member Leopold Freudberg and Greens Superintendant Rudy Will. Its Grand Opening was on July 26, 1950 and it has played to rave reviews ever since. In 1999, the North Course went through an extensive renovation, which included the replacement of the original 18 greens. The renovation was by renowned Course Architect Arthur Hills.

In the early 1950’s our golf courses also included a challenging 9 hole, par 3 course with holes ranging from 120 to 230 yards, known as the “Iron Duke”. In August of 1957, a fourth 9 hole course opened. The “Iron Duke” was eventually converted into a regulation 9 hole course, was combined with the other 9 holes, and premiered on Labor Day of 1961 as the South Course that we enjoy today.

Over the years, our courses have hosted many special golf events including the 1953 National Celebrities Tournament, then a regular event on the Professional Tour. Participants included such legends as Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Cary Middlecoff, Lew Worsham and the winner Ted Kroll. For many years, we have also hosted regional qualifying for the Men’s and Ladies United States Open Golf Championships, as well as all of the various championships of each of the local golf associations both Amateur and Professional. These events serve as a constant testament to the test of golf and conditioning of our courses.

The Club’s tennis courts have also seen their share of excitement through the years. Much like our golf courses, our tennis courts have also hosted many local Professional and Amateur tournaments.

Woodmont has hosted the USTA 18 & Under Boys National Tennis Championship as well as the Corel Champions Tennis Tournament. The Corel, which was played at Woodmont in the mid 1990’s, was a part of the Nuveen Seniors Tennis Tour. It featured stars of the game such as Andres Gomez, Johan Kriek, Eddie Dibbs, John Lloyd, tennis legends Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg and Washington’s own, Harold Solomon.

Tennis at the Club started out with twenty-two outdoor courts. Today we have sixteen outdoor courts and we are very proud of our beautiful indoor Tennis Center. This magnificent building has six permanent, state of the art indoor courts in a climate controlled environment and is regarded as one of the premier Country Club facilities in the country.

Our Swimming Pool has long been the center of summer life at the club. Many generations of members have learned to swim and have benefited through our outstanding Swim programs over the years.

Our Fitness & Wellness Center and our excellent training staff have been an extraordinary addition to the health and wellbeing of our members. With state of the art equipment and programs designed to help everyone, the Fitness Center has truly become the go to spot at the club.

As we have evolved over the years, Woodmont, with its impeccable facilities, exceptional staff and long history of excellence continues to take extraordinary care of its Members and Guests alike as they not only celebrate special occasions and events, but also as they simply enjoy taking refuge from daily life at our beautiful oasis. Woodmont has truly withstood the test of time as the Platinum Standard for Country Clubs across the country.
